How care (al)lures

How care (al)lures

Last weekend I thoroughly enjoyed reading an article by Michiel van der Geest in de Volkskrant about nurses leading the way in green healthcare. Nicole Hunfeld shares her 'eye-opener' during the COVID pandemic — the starting point of her mission to radically green the healthcare sector together with nurses.

It's great to read that so much is happening. Countless initiatives have now taken root in a sector that is already working incredibly hard, and that gives hope.

Why healthcare can be such a game changer

Nicole calls it the 'triple benefit': going green means lower emissions, lower costs, and often less time. That combination is incredibly powerful. And that's exactly what we at Sustainers have been working on over the past few months together with a major health insurer — weaving sustainability together with the financial added value for organizations.

Across many sectors we see similar cases where greening goes hand in hand with efficiency and cost reduction, as long as you approach it the right way. Together with De Groene Huisarts, we are developing data for GPs to make that impact visible there too. Another part of healthcare that is working flat out and creaking under the pressure of climate change — but one that is willing to take action. Concretely and practically.

The opportunity in healthcare

The article makes it painfully clear that healthcare has a strong throwaway culture. It is certainly not the only sector. Acknowledging that is step one. A lot of material is discarded unnecessarily or replaced too quickly. Products are not reused even when it would be perfectly possible. And that is where the opportunity lies.

By being smarter about materials, throwing less away, and reusing responsibly more often, something remarkable happens:

  • Costs go down
  • Waste decreases
  • CO₂ emissions fall

And perhaps most importantly of all in healthcare: it saves time and reduces workload.

Sustainability as a lever

Healthcare shows how powerful sustainability can be when you approach it well. Not as an extra burden or a box to tick, but as a solution. Better for the environment. Easier in practice. Cheaper to implement.
